Luc defontaine considers that the absence of primal intention as his first essence of creation. The formal potentiality given by fortune, the compoundings and the contrasts of colours, would be thus the substance of this "direct", instinctive painting which seems to possess its proper life. This colored and luminous universe, charged with emotions reaches to a splitting of reality going towards a non-representation. The lyric abstraction, movement in which he seems to recognize his art entirely, tries to translate feelings and beliefs in a non-figurative creation realised in the second. In his will not be a prisonner of a technique and to recover the liberty of painting, he reproduces a work of reconsideration, of destruction, taking off the substance to go back to a nude picture.

Luc Defontaine considère l’absence d’intention première comme l’essence même de sa création. Les virtualités formelles offertes par le hasard, les combinaisons et les contrastes de couleurs, seraient donc la matière même de cette peinture «directe», instinctive qui semble posséder sa propre vie. Cet univers coloré et lumineux, chargé d’émotions aboutit à une désintégration de la réalité allant vers une non-figuration. L'abstraction lyrique, mouvement dans lequel il se reconnaît le plus, tente de traduire sentiments et impressions dans une création non-figurative réalisée souvent dans l'instant. Dans sa volonté de ne pas s'enfermer dans une technique et pour retrouver la liberté de peindre, il reproduit un travail de remise en cause, de destruction, en enlevant la matière pour revenir à une toile presque nue.
